The short answer
BJ's doesn't run a points-style "fuel rewards" program like Shell or Kroger. Its version is the High Octane program — now branded Fuel Saver — where every item marked with the gas-pump icon banks 10¢ off a gallon toward your next fill-up. Buy five marked items and you've earned 50¢ a gallon. The discount loads onto your membership card automatically at checkout; you redeem it at the pump within 30 days, up to 40 gallons. It is separate from — and stacks with — the 10–15¢ discount the BJ's One Mastercard gives.
Search "how does BJ's high octane rewards work" and you'll find a lot of confused shoppers. The name doesn't help: High Octane has nothing to do with octane ratings or premium gas. It's BJ's marketing name for a fuel-savings program you earn by shopping, not by fueling up. Here's exactly what it is, how you earn and redeem it, and how it fits with BJ's other gas discounts.
"High Octane" and "Fuel Saver" are the same program
First, the naming, because it trips people up. BJ's originally called this the High Octane gas promotion; the same mechanism is now marketed as Fuel Saver. If you see either term — or just a little gas-pump symbolon a shelf tag, a coupon, or in the member savings booklet — it's all one thing. The Fuel Saver icon marks products that earn you money off a gallon of gas.
This is also the same discount we describe as "Fuel Saver items" in our guide to every BJ's gas discount. This post zooms in on that one program — how the earning and redeeming actually work — since it's the piece members find most confusing.
How you earn: 10¢ a gallon per marked item
The rule is simple: each qualifying item you buy earns 10¢ off per gallon on a future fill-up. BJ's puts the icon on more than 150 everyday products — groceries, paper goods, snacks, health and beauty, pet supplies — and the list rotates. A few things that surprise people:
- The savings stack per item. Two marked items is 20¢ a gallon, three is 30¢, five is 50¢, and so on — there's no cap on how much you can bank.
- The same item counts every time.Buy three of the same marked detergent and that's 30¢ a gallon, not 10¢.
- Any BJ's channel qualifies. In-club, on BJs.com, curbside pickup, and same-day delivery all earn the discount.
- Purchases add up across the month. Discounts from separate trips in the same calendar month accumulate on your card before your next fill-up.
And to say it once more, because the name invites the mistake: earning a High Octane discount has nothing to do with buying premium (93-octane) gas. You earn it by buying groceries and household items that carry the icon.
How to redeem your High Octane rewards
There's nothing to clip or activate — redemption is built into the pump:
- The discount loads onto your membership card automatically when you check out. Allow about 15 minutes after checkout or delivery for it to register.
- You have 30 days to use it, and you redeem the whole balance on a single fill-up.
- At the pump you scan your membership card(or tap a BJ's One Mastercard, which doubles as your membership) before you fuel, and the discount comes off the per-gallon price automatically.
- Check your balance anytime by logging into your BJs.com account before you drive over.
- Sharing a membership? Turn on the account's shared awards setting, or only the primary member can redeem the gas discount.
For the full walk-through of scanning in and paying, see how to pay at the pump with the BJ's app.
The fine print worth knowing
- Gallon cap: a discounted fill-up covers up to 40 gallons or $99, whichever comes first.
- Price floor:the discount won't drop the pump price below about 2¢ a gallon— except during BJ's once-a-year Penny-per-Gallon event, when enough marked items can take it to a literal 1¢.
- Use it or lose it: after a fill-up your balance resets to zero, and any unused discount is forfeited at the end of the calendar month— it doesn't roll over.
- One a day: you can earn and redeem a fuel discount once per day per membership.
- No cash value, nontransferable, and items that earned a redeemed discount can't be returned.
"50¢ off gas at BJ's" — which offer is it?
A lot of people search for BJ's 50 cents off gasand land on two different things. It's worth separating them:
- Five High Octane items = 50¢. Because each marked item is 10¢, buying five of them earns 50¢ a gallon the everyday way, through the program above.
- The spend-$150 promo = 50¢.Several times a year BJ's also runs a spend-and-save deal — spend $150 in one transaction, get 50¢ off a gallon — with a 7-day redemption window. That's a separate, limited-time offer, not the High Octane program.
The good news is you don't have to choose: High Octane discounts stack with the spend-$150 promo, so a well-planned shopping trip can trigger both at once.
High Octane vs. the BJ's One card gas discount
The other thing people conflate with "fuel rewards" is the BJ's One Mastercard discount. These are two different levers, and knowing which is which helps you stack them:
- High Octane / Fuel Saveris earned by buying marked items — it's variable, and you build it up over the month.
- The card discount is automatic and always on: 10¢ a gallon with the BJ's One Mastercard, 15¢ with BJ's One+, applied at the pump every time, regardless of what you bought.
Note that BJ's Gas purchases earn the per-gallon card discountbut not the card's cash-back rewards rate — the fuel benefit comes strictly as money off at the pump. Both of the above also stack on top of the built-in member price and the extra 5¢ that a Club+ membership adds. Layer them all and a single fill-up can carry the member price, Club+, the card, your High Octane items, and a spend-$150 promo together — the full stack, and how low it goes, is laid out in our save-on-gas guide.
The bottom line
BJ's "fuel rewards" aren't a loyalty-points scheme — they're the High Octane (now Fuel Saver) program plus the everyday card and membership discounts. Watch for the gas-pump icon while you shop, bank 10¢ a gallon per marked item, and cash it all in on one fill-up within 30 days. Remember the limits — 40 gallons, a roughly-2¢ floor, month-end forfeiture, one redemption a day — and it's a genuinely easy way to knock real money off a tank you were already going to buy. This is members-only, so you'll need a card at the pump; see do you need a BJ's membership to buy gas? Then check today's price near you on our live price pages.
