The short answer
BJ's sells two grades of gasoline — 87-octane regular and 93-octane premium — at every club, with no 89 mid-grade in between. Dieselis available too, but only at some locations: of the roughly 200 BJ's fuel stations we track, about 89 sell diesel. It's all standard E10 gasoline (and ultra-low-sulfur diesel), unbranded but EPA-compliant, and sold to members only.
BJ's keeps its fuel lineup deliberately simple, which is good news at the pump but raises a few specific questions: what octane is the premium? Does my club have 93? Can I get diesel here? Here's exactly what BJ's sells, the octane ratings, where diesel is available, and how to know which grade your car actually needs.
The two gasoline grades: 87 regular and 93 premium
Every BJ's Gas location sells the same two grades of gasoline:
- Regular — 87 octane. The standard everyday grade and the right fuel for the large majority of cars on the road.
- Premium — 93 octane.BJ's high grade. Because BJ's operates across the Eastern U.S., where 93 is the standard premium, that's what you'll find at virtually every club — not the 91-octane premium common out West.
Notably, there is no mid-grade— no 88 or 89 button. If your manual suggests mid-grade, you can run 87 for normal driving or step up to 93; there's nothing in between to choose. That two-grade setup is consistent across BJ's network: in our live data, all of the stations selling gasoline offer both 87 and 93, and none report a mid-grade price.
What octane actually means — and which grade your car needs
Octane is simply a fuel's resistance to "knock" — premature, uneven combustion that high-compression and turbocharged engines are prone to. A higher number isn't "better" or "cleaner" gas; it just resists knock at higher pressures. The Federal Trade Commission puts it bluntly: for most cars, using a higher octane than your owner's manual recommends gives no benefit — not more power, not better mileage, not a cleaner engine.
So the rule is easy: buy what your owner's manual says. If it reads "regular," the 87 at BJ's is exactly right and the 93 is just money spent for nothing. If it reads "premium required," your engine is built for 93 and BJ's premium covers it. "Premium recommended" is the only gray area — the car runs fine on 87 but may make a little more power on 93. The one real warning sign is audible engine knock or pinging on regular, which means step up a grade.
Does BJ's sell diesel? Yes — at some clubs
BJ's sells diesel, but it's the one fuel that isn't everywhere. Across the roughly 200 BJ's fuel stations we track, about 89 — a little under half — carry diesel, while regular and premium are at all of them. It's standard on-road ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD), the same diesel sold across the U.S., and like the gasoline it's a members-only pump priced below the typical local station.
Because availability is hit-or-miss, check before you drive. Every station page on this site shows whether that club sells diesel and its live price — so you can confirm your nearest diesel pump on the stations near me page or your state's price page rather than guessing.
What do the grades cost?
Prices move daily and vary by club, so the only honest answer is a live one. As a rule of thumb, regular is the cheapest grade, premium runs roughly 50–70¢ a gallon more, and diesel tracks its own market — sometimes above regular, sometimes below. Whatever today's numbers are, BJ's members generally pay under the nearby branded stations.

Is it good fuel? Unbranded, E10, and not Top Tier
All three fuels are unbranded: BJ's doesn't refine its own gas, it buys finished fuel from the same major regional refiners that supply the name-brand stations nearby. The gasoline is standard E10— up to 10% ethanol, like most U.S. gas — and it meets the EPA's quality and detergent rules. The one asterisk is that BJ's fuel isn't Top Tier certified, so it carries the federal minimum detergent rather than the higher Top Tier dose. Saving on whichever grade you buy
The grade you pick doesn't change how you save — the same discounts stack on 87, 93, or diesel. A Club+ membership takes 5¢ a gallon off, a BJ's One or One+ Mastercard knocks off 10–15¢, and Fuel Saver items add 10¢ each. Our guide to every BJ's gas discount shows how to layer them. One thing that is universal: all of it is members-only, so the pump checks your membership first — see do you need a BJ's membership to buy gas?
Frequently asked questions
What octane is BJ’s premium gas?
BJ’s premium is 93 octane at virtually every club. Because BJ’s operates across the Eastern U.S. — where 93 is the standard high grade — you won’t find the 91-octane premium common on the West Coast. Its regular grade is the usual 87 octane.
Does BJ’s have 93 octane gas?
Yes. 93 octane is exactly what BJ’s sells as its premium grade, and every BJ’s Gas location carries it. If your car calls for premium (93), BJ’s has it at the same members-only discount as its regular gas.
Does BJ’s sell mid-grade (89 octane) gas?
No. BJ’s keeps it simple with just two gasoline grades — 87 regular and 93 premium — so there is no 88 or 89 mid-grade button at the pump. If your owner’s manual recommends mid-grade, most automakers say 87 is fine for everyday driving, or you can step up to 93.
Does BJ’s gas have diesel?
At some clubs, not all. Of the roughly 200 BJ’s fuel stations we track, about 89 — a little under half — sell diesel, while every one of them sells regular and premium gasoline. Each station page on this site shows whether that club has diesel and its live price, so check before you drive over.
Is BJ’s diesel cheaper than other stations?
Usually. Like its gasoline, BJ’s sells diesel as a members-only benefit priced below the local average, and the same savings stack on top — a Club+ membership, a BJ’s One Mastercard, and Fuel Saver items all apply to a diesel fill-up.
What kind of gas does BJ’s sell?
Standard E10 gasoline — up to 10% ethanol — in two grades, 87 regular and 93 premium, plus ultra-low-sulfur diesel at select clubs. The fuel is unbranded and bought from the same regional refiners that supply nearby name-brand stations; it meets EPA quality and detergent rules but is not Top Tier certified.
