The short answer
At BJ's Gas the app is your membership card, not your wallet. Paying is two quick taps: (1)verify membership by scanning the digital card in the BJ's app (or your physical card), then (2) pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or any tap-enabled card— BJ's has had contactless Tap & Pay at every gas location since January 2025. The one shortcut: a BJ's One Mastercard does both in a single tap.
The most common mix-up at a BJ's pump is expecting the app to pay for your gas. It won't — and once you know the two-step rhythm (membership first, payment second) it's genuinely faster than digging out a card. Here's exactly how to do it, how Apple Pay and Google Pay fit in, and why the app alone can't cover the fuel.
How to pay at the pump, step by step
- Open the BJ's app and pull up your digital membership card.It lives on the app's home screen / account area as a scannable barcode. (No app? A physical membership card works exactly the same.)
- At the pump, choose credit or debit. The pump prompts you to verify membership before it dispenses.
- Scan your membership barcode.Hold the app's barcode (or your physical card) to the pump's scanner.
- Tap to pay. Hold your phone or watch — Apple Pay or Google Pay — or a contactless card to the reader, and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your watch.
- Pump your gas. Once the payment is approved, fuel up as normal.
Shortcut: if you carry the BJ's One™ or One+™ Mastercard®, one tap clears your membership and your payment together — you skip the separate barcode scan entirely (and take 10–15¢ a gallon off at the same time).
Does BJ's gas take Apple Pay and Google Pay?
Yes — at every location. BJ's turned on Tap & Pay across all of its gas stations in January 2025, so any contactless method works at the pump: Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a tap-enabled credit or debit card. To use Apple Pay specifically, select credit/debit, hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the contactless symbol on the reader, authenticate, and you're approved.
The catch worth repeating: a mobile wallet covers the payment, not the membership. Unless you're tapping a BJ's One card, you still scan your membership barcode first — Apple Pay doesn't carry your BJ's membership, only your funding card.
Can you use the BJ's app instead of a card?
No — and this is the misconception worth clearing up. The BJ's app holds your digital membership card and shows local fuel prices, but it does not pay at the pump. You might be thinking of ExpressPay, the app's scan-and-pay feature — that's for in-club shopping only, not fuel. So at the pump the app handles the membership step, and a card or mobile wallet handles the money. There's no cash at the pump either — BJ's Gas is card-operated.
Use the app to find the cheapest pump first
The app does one more useful thing before you even pull in: tap the fuel icon and it shows your local BJ's gas prices, so you can pick the cheaper club. You can do the same here — see live regular, premium, and diesel prices on our price pages or find your nearest station on the stations near me page.
