The short answer
Not the way most people expect. Your BJ's cash-back rewards— the 2% a Club+ member earns, or the 3–5% on a BJ's One Mastercard — can't be spent at the pump, and gas purchases don't earn them either: BJ's Gas is an excluded purchase. What people usually mean by "gas rewards" is the Fuel Saverprogram (formerly "High Octane") — cents-off-per-gallon you bank by buying marked items, redeemed automatically at the pump. They're two completely separate things.
"Can I use my BJ's rewards for gas?" is a fair question, because BJ's uses the word rewards for two things that have nothing to do with each other. One is a cash-back balance you redeem on groceries. The other is a per-gallon fuel discountyou redeem at the pump. Mixing them up is easy — so here's exactly what each one is, and which actually saves you money on a fill-up.
BJ's "rewards" are cash back — and gas is off-limits
The rewards most members think of are the cash back you earn on what you buy. There are two versions:
- Club+ membership earns 2% back on most BJ's purchases, up to $500 in rewards a year.
- The BJ's One Mastercard earns 3% back at BJ's, and BJ's One+ earns 5% when you pay with the card.
Whichever you earn, it lands as a rewards balance you redeem in $10 increments toward purchases and membership fees — in-club, on BJs.com, or in the app. And here's the catch: BJ's Gas is on the list of excluded purchases. Gas doesn't earncash-back rewards, and there's no step at a self-serve pump to applya reward Award to your fuel. You scan your membership and pay — the rewards balance simply isn't part of that transaction.
What does save you at the pump: Fuel Saver
The "rewards" that work on gas are the Fuel Saverdiscounts — the program BJ's used to call High Octane (which, despite the name, has nothing to do with premium fuel). You bank them by shopping:
- Every product marked with the gas-pump icon banks 10¢ off a gallon — five marked items is 50¢ a gallon.
- The discount loads onto your membership card automatically. You scan your card at the pump, and it comes off the per-gallon price — up to 40 gallons, within 30 days.
- It's use-it-or-lose-it: the balance resets to zero after a fill-up, and you can redeem once per day per membership.
We break the whole program down in BJ's Fuel Rewards & the High Octane program, explained.
Rewards vs. Fuel Saver, side by side
| Cash-back rewards | Fuel Saver | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | 2–5% back as a rewards balance | Cents-off-per-gallon at the pump |
| How you earn it | Club+ tier or a BJ's One card | Buying gas-pump-icon items |
| Works on gas? | No — gas is excluded | Yes — that's its whole point |
| Where you redeem | In-club, BJs.com, or the app | Automatically at the pump |
The discounts that stack on your fuel
Since your rewards balance can't touch gas, the savings on a fill-up come from discounts applied at the pump. Layer them and they add up fast:
- Member price — BJ's Gas is typically about 20¢ a gallon below nearby stations to begin with.
- Club+ adds an extra 5¢ a gallon over a standard Club membership.
- The BJ's One card takes off 10¢ a gallon (15¢ with BJ's One+) automatically when you pay with it.
- Fuel Saver stacks on top — your banked 10¢-per-item balance.
The full stack, and how low it can go, is in our guide to every BJ's gas discount.
The bottom line
No — you can't redeem your BJ's cash-back rewards for gas, and gas doesn't earn them. Save that balance for the register. The "rewards" that lower your fuel price are Fuel Saverdiscounts plus the automatic member, Club+, and BJ's One card cents-off — all of which come off at the pump when you scan your card. Since every one of them is members-only, you'll need a card to fuel up in the first place; see do you need a BJ's membership to buy gas? Then check today's price near you on our live price pages.
