The short answer
BJ's Gas is members-only and card-operated— there's no cash at the pump. The routine is five steps: (1) pull up and choose credit/debit, (2) scan your BJ's membership card or app barcode, (3) tap or insert your payment, (4) pick your grade, and (5) fill up. If you carry a BJ's One Mastercard, a single tap clears both the membership check and the payment at once.
If you've never filled up at a BJ's before, the one thing that throws people off is the order: you scan your membershipfirst, then pay — the opposite of a normal gas station where you just swipe a card. Get that rhythm down and it's quick. Here's exactly what to do at the pump, what to bring, and the first-timer gotchas worth knowing.
What you need before you go
- An active BJ's membership.Gas is a member benefit and the pump verifies it before dispensing — a physical card or the digital card in the BJ's app both work. (More on whether non-members can pump below.)
- A payment method.Any major credit or debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a BJ's gift card. There is no cashat BJ's pumps.
- The right pump. Not every club has fuel — roughly 202 of BJ's clubs have a gas station attached. Check first on our stations near me page.
How to get gas at BJ's, step by step
- Pull up and select credit or debit.BJ's pumps are self-serve. Tap the screen to start and choose credit or debit — the pump then asks you to verify your membership.
- Scan your membership.Hold your physical BJ's card or the digital card in the BJ's appup to the barcode scanner. This is the step that's easy to forget — no scan, no pump.
- Pay.Tap or insert your card, or hold your phone or watch to the contactless reader for Apple Pay or Google Pay. BJ's turned on Tap & Pay at every gas location in January 2025, so contactless works everywhere.
- Choose your grade.Select regular (87 octane), premium (93), or diesel where it's offered, then lift the nozzle.
- Fill up.Any membership discount you've earned is applied automatically — you don't punch in a code. Grab a receipt at the end if you want one.
The one-tap shortcut: the BJ's One™ Mastercard®combines steps 2 and 3 — a single tap clears the membership check and pays at once, and takes 10¢ a gallon off (15¢ with the One+ card). It's the fastest way through the pump.
Do I scan my card or pay first?
Scan first. The membership check comes before payment — the pump won't let you get to the card step until it's confirmed you're a member. So the order is always membership → payment → grade → fuel. The only exception is the BJ's One Mastercard, which does both in one tap. A mobile wallet like Apple Pay handles the paymentonly — it doesn't carry your BJ's membership, so you still scan your card or app barcode first.
First-timer gotchas
- The pre-authorization hold.Like every gas station, BJ's places a temporary hold to make sure the card is good. Per BJ's, that's $1 for most cards and $100 for debit and Amex. The hold doesn't actually charge you — it drops off once the real amount settles, usually within a few days. Worried about a big hold on a debit card? Running it as credit at the pump avoids the $100.
- Members only — but anyone can pay. You need a membership to fuel up, yet the payment side is flexible: any major card or wallet works, not just a store card. See do you need a BJ's membership to buy gas?
- The app is your card, not your wallet. The BJ's app shows a scannable membership barcode and local fuel prices, but it doesn't pay for gas — you still tap a card or mobile wallet. Full walk-through: paying at the pump with the BJ's app.
- Pump hours differ from the club. The pumps usually open before and close after the warehouse — check the exact times in our gas station hours guide.
Before you drive: check the price
BJ's gas is usually a few cents under nearby stations, but it's worth a look first. See live regular, premium, and diesel prices at every club on our home page, and stack every discount with our guide to saving on BJ's gas.
