September was an expensive month at the pump. As of October 1, 2026, regular gasoline averages $4.04 a gallon across the 210 BJ's clubs in our tracker — about 23 cents more, a 6.0% rise, than the $3.82 it cost on September 2. Diesel did far worse, jumping 69 cents to $6.05, a 13% climb in four weeks. The increase reached almost everywhere: 196 of those 210 clubs are posting higher regular prices than they were a month ago. The one bit of relief is at the very end — prices topped out around September 22 and have been drifting lower for the past week.

Three weeks of climbing, then a plateau
The month split into two halves. Through September 21, regular rose on every day we have a reading, a cent or two at a time, with one sharp jump: 6.5 cents overnight from September 10 to 11, the biggest single-day move of the month. The average crossed $4 on September 13 and peaked at $4.10 on September 22. It then held flat for about a week before slipping in the final days, landing at $4.04 on October 1 — roughly 6 cents off the high. Diesel followed the same shape on a bigger scale: it added 16 cents on September 11 alone, peaked at $6.17 on September 23, and has since given back about 12 cents.
The Midwest and Florida took the biggest hits
This time the Northeast, where most BJ's clubs are, was not the story. New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland rose about 16 to 18 cents, below the national rate. The steepest jumps came farther west. Michigan's club average climbed 44 cents and is now the highest of any state, and Ohio added 33 cents. The two Indiana clubs, Noblesville and Carmel, each went up about 50 cents — from $3.15, the lowest prices anywhere in the network a month ago, to $3.65–$3.66. Great Lakes markets depend on a small number of regional refineries and are known for fast, sharp swings, and September showed it. Florida, the state with the most clubs at 35, rose 32 cents.
| State | Stations | Avg now | 30-day change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michigan | 5 | $4.303 | ▲ $0.44 (11.3%) |
| Ohio | 7 | $3.996 | ▲ $0.33 (9.1%) |
| Florida | 35 | $4.041 | ▲ $0.32 (8.5%) |
| North Carolina | 10 | $3.927 | ▲ $0.29 (8.1%) |
| Delaware | 3 | $4.086 | ▲ $0.29 (7.6%) |
The five steepest 30-day increases by state-average regular price, September 2 – October 1, 2026, among states with three or more BJ's clubs.
Georgia was the only state that went down, and only slightly: its seven clubs average 3 cents less than a month ago, with Warner Robins down 16 cents and Woodstock down 14. Upstate New York had the other exceptions. Albany cut regular 59 cents, to $3.34, and Amherst and Clarence near Buffalo dropped 18 to 29 cents. Most other New York clubs went up.
Where BJ's gas is cheapest and priciest today
Prices went up almost everywhere, but the gap between states actually narrowed. There is now a 73-cent-a-gallon spread between the cheapest and most expensive state averages — Georgia at $3.57 and Michigan at $4.30 — compared with 98 cents in our June report. The single cheapest BJ's pump in the country is also an outlier: Albany, New York, at $3.34, ahead of several Georgia clubs at $3.41–$3.49. The most expensive is in the same state — Massena, New York, at $4.45.

What's behind the rise — and why diesel ran hotter
BJ's didn't cause this; it followed a national surge. The main driver is crude oil: with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz still disrupted, crude moved back toward $100 a barrel around September 10, and the AAA national average for regular rose week after week, reaching about $4.48 by late September. Our September 11 jump lines up with that move — warehouse clubs work on thin fuel margins, so their pump prices react to wholesale costs within days.
Diesel was squeezed even harder. In its September Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration warned that U.S. distillate inventories (diesel and heating oil) would fall below 100 million barrels in September and stay under the five-year low through the end of the year, as strong export demand drew supply overseas. AAA's national diesel average hit a record $6.53 around September 22–23 — the same days our BJ's diesel average peaked. That's why diesel rose 13% here while regular rose 6%: gasoline mostly tracks crude, but diesel also tracks a distillate market that is unusually tight. The EIA's weekly price survey is the best place to follow both.
For members, the late-month dip is welcome but small. Regular is about 6 cents below its peak and diesel about 12, but both are still well above where they started in September. The EIA expects diesel to stay expensive through the fourth quarter, so if you drive a diesel vehicle, don't count on a quick return to summer prices.
The club discount matters more at $4 gas
When prices are this high, every cent per gallon adds up. On September 28, AAA's national average for regular was about $4.48, while our BJ's average that day was $4.09. That isn't an exact comparison, since AAA's figure includes high-cost states like California where BJ's has no clubs. Still, BJ's members generally pay 10 to 25 cents a gallon less than nearby stations, and Fuel Saver coupons, Club+, and the BJ's One™ Mastercard add more on top. Our guide to stacking every BJ's gas discount shows how much a single fill-up can save.
